The mills, at Edinburgh, Castleford, Knottingley, Liverpool, Corby and Tewkesbury, supply flour to other bakery businesses. Last year they generated sales of £96m (US$153.9m).

The sale, to US agribusiness giant Archer Daniels Midland, is estimated to be worth between £65m and £70m.

ABF still owns three flourmills to supply its Allied Bakeries subsidiary, which makes Kingsmill and Allinson bread and Ryvita biscuits, reported the Financial Times.
