The South Korean unit of US food company General Mills is reportedly planning to invest KRW40bn (US$38.4m) over the next five years to expand its chain of Haagen Dazs ice cream stores to 200 outlets by 2009.
Han Jong-ryul, head of General Mills Korea, said the company plans to open 40 new stores every year from 2005 to grow its sales to KRW67bn by 2009, reported Asia Pulse.
The Haagen Dazs brand was introduced in South Korea in 1991 and now has 17 stores, while supplying more than 7,000 other retail outlets.
“We don’t want to provide a place simply for the purchase of ice cream,” Han was quoted by Asia Pulse as saying. “Rather, we try to establish a place where people can enjoy different kinds of culture like Starbucks or McDonald’s.”
