Brazilian meat giant JBS has revealed it has built a new beef plant in the state of Mato Grosso following a BRL70m (US$17.1m) investment.
The site in the municipality of Brasnorte is operated by the Sao Paulo-based company’s Friboi unit with an initial capacity to process 500 cattle a day, according to a statement. Around 300 jobs have been created.
JBS said further investment is planned for the facility, which will supply its domestic market in Brazil, leading to an additional 900 jobs. Operations began yesterday (9 January).
Renato Costa, the president of Friboi, said: “We believe in the potential of Brasnorte, which will bring even more relevance for our cattle operation in Mato Grosso. We [will] continue to invest in the coming years in all our plants, which reaffirms the long-term commitment of the company in Brazil.”
The Friboi unit employs around 45,000 people across Brazil. JBS said the same business arm is due to open two new burger lines at its plant in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso, through January and March.
