Kellogg has become the latest major manufacturer to decide to use the Nutri-Score nutrition labels on products.
The US giant said the labels would go on breakfast cereals and cereal bars sold in France under the Kellogg’s and Vérival brands. All of these products will have the labels on packaging by the end of 2021, with the roll-out starting this year.
France introduced Nutri-Score, a voluntary colour-code system on nutritional quality, in 2017 in a bid to enable consumers to know at a glance a food product’s health rating on a scale running from A to E.
As of the end of last year, Kellogg said 16% of its Kellogg’s and Vérival recipes had a rank of Nutri-Score A, with 9% marked as Nutri-Score B.
The majority of the products to have the labels had a C (39%) and D (35%) mark. Kellogg said only one product is scored as an E.
“We are proud to voluntarily adopt Nutri-Score in France. We are aware that consumers today expect more transparency from us and they want easier to understand nutritional information. We believe that we have an important role to play in helping consumers to make informed choices in line with public health nutrition policy,” Éric Le Cerf, the head of Kellogg’s business in France, said.
