Acesur, the Spain-based, olive-oil manufacturer, plans to build its first production plant in the US, a key overseas market for the business.

The company is to spend US$11m setting up the factory, which is to be located in Suffolk in Virginia. The new facility will handle Acesur’s bulk oil imports from Argentina, Australia and Spain.

“Virginia was chosen due to its market proximity, progressive infrastructure investment, as well as the Port of Virginia’s proximity to the plant,” Joseph Fairchild, vice president of operations and director of purchasing for Acesur’s US arm, said.

Acesur exports its products to more than 90 countries. According to data on Acesur’s website, exports account for more than 40% of its production. Its brands in the US include La Espanola, Italica and Villa Blanca.

The Seville-based company has other production facilities in four locations in Spain – Madrid, Toledo, Cuenca and Jaen.

As well as olive oil, the company also markets olives, vinegars, dressings and sauces. The company’s olive-oil arm offers a private-label service alongside marketing the brands in its portfolio.
