This week’s new product launches that caught the eye include vegan cheese and baked savouries from Norseland and Holland’s Pies, respectively, and a high-fibre loaf from Hovis.
Hormel’s Applegate Farms launches Well Carved blended meat and veg range
Applegate Farms, the US natural and organic meat company owned by Hormel Foods, has launched a blended meat and vegetables range called Well Carved.
The range, consisting of meatballs and burgers, has been launched, Applegate said, to “satisfy consumers who are mindful of their meat intake and its nutritional, ethical and environmental impact”.
The product line combines meat with whole vegetables, legumes and grains. It consists of the Grass-Fed Organic Beef Burger (with 1/3 cup of cauliflower, spinach, lentils and butternut squash), the Organic Turkey Burger (with 1/4 cup sweet potato, white bean, kale and roasted onion), the Organic Asian Style Pork Meatball (with 1/4 cup brown rice, green onion, carrot and parsley) and Organic Mediterranean Style Turkey Meatball (with 1/4 cup lentils, feta cheese and spinach).
The burgers have a RRP of US$9.99 per pack while the meatballs have a RRP of $6.99.

The Meatless Farm makes first foray into frozen food in the UK
The Meatless Farm Co., a UK-based alternative-protein start-up, has launched a frozen food range in the UK.
Up until now the company has concentrated on chilled products but it is now producing Meatless Mince, Sausages and Burgers for the frozen aisle.
They are being sold via Sainsbury’s with a RRP of GBP3.00 (US$3.68) for the mince and GBP2.50 for the sausages and burgers.
Michael Hunter, the company’s chief growth officer, said: “We’ve seen a shift in consumer attitudes towards plant-based food, it’s not a vegan niche but becoming a mainstream movement. Providing a frozen range is another way to meet this demand.”
The company recently switched its sausage and burger recipes to use pea protein rather than soya to create “an even meatier taste and texture”.
Lantmannen switches Americana brand into retail
Sweden-based agri-food group Lantmannen has moved its baked goods brand Americana from the foodservice channel into the UK retail market.
The frozen range – made up of Americana Floured Baps and Deli Rolls – is manufactured by the company’s Lantmännen Unibake UK subsidiary and has been listed by Tesco in stores and online with a RRP of GBP1.20 (US$1.47).
The foodservice channel has all but closed down as restaurants, pubs, school canteens and other outlets have been shuttered to stop the spread of Covid-19.
Peter Drew, marketing and innovation director at Lantmännen Unibake, said: “It’s great to see the Americana brand make the transition from foodservice to frozen food retail in response to the Covid19 lockdown.”
He added: “The current climate means that we are having to adapt quickly to changes and we are committed to supporting our customers however we can.”
UK supermarkets to stock Oggs’ new alternative egg product
London-based vegan cake maker Oggs has developed a plant-based liquid egg alternative.
Oggs Aquafaba is described by the company as a “natural egg alternative that whisks, whips and binds just like an egg”.
The chickpea-based product will be stocked by Waitrose from 10 June and in Asda and Sainsbury’s later in the year. It has a RRP of GBP1.99 (US$2.44) for 200ml.
Oggs said: “At a time when most of us are staying at home, many people have been inspired to get their aprons on. Oggs Aquafaba is set to be the new store cupboard staple, keeping bakers baking, chefs making and cakes rising.
“This hassle-free formula is purely plant-based, totally egg-, dairy- and gluten-free and made using chickpea water, nothing else”
The product, which is low calorie, fat-free and contains no added sugar, can be kept in the cupboard for more than six months.
Halo Top launches new low-calorie ice lolly range
US-based better-for-you ice cream company Halo Top has launched a new range of low-calorie ice lollies.
Halo Top Pops come in three flavours – Brownie Batter, Mint Chip and Sea Salt Caramel – and contain 100 to 110 calories per lolly.
Made from ultra-filtered skimmed milk, the lollies, which contain six grams of protein, have a RRP of US$5.99 for a box of five.

Arla Foods debuts Yeo Valley cheddar
Arla Foods, the Denmark-based dairy giant, is launching an organic cheddar cheese in the UK using locally-sourced milk under its Yeo Valley brand, which it acquired in 2018.
The Yeo Valley Organic mature cheddar has been rolled out in Tesco, and Waitrose is expected to follow during the summer, with the addition of a mild variant.
Arla said the new mature cheddar has been produced at its plant in Taw Valley, located at North Tawton in Devon.
Kate Sharrock, the brand manager for Yeo Valley at Arla, said: “We’re delighted to introduce cheese to Arla’s Yeo Valley portfolio. We know there is a huge appetite for organic cheese amongst consumers and see this as a great opportunity to increase our share in this market. We firmly believe organic should be for everyone and by positioning this alongside mainstream cheddar brands, we are expanding the category and offering organic for all.”
Finsbury Food Group launches vegan cake range with Bosh!
UK-based bakery products firm Finsbury Food Group has launched a plant-based celebration cake range in conjunction with social media platform and vegan recipe brand Bosh!
The cakes in the range are Ultimate Chocolate Cake and Luscious Lemon Cake, both with a RRP of GBP3.00 (US$3.73) and Chocolate Happy Birthday Cake and Vanilla Happy Birthday Cake, both with a RRP of GBP8.00.
Jack Cook-Broussine, brand manager for Finsbury Food Group, said: “The team at Bosh! are paving the way when it comes to creating plant-based and vegan friendly recipes and products that taste delicious, with avid followers who champion and welcome their content.
“This partnership has allowed Finsbury Food Group to expand into this category and show our capabilities for creating high quality, enjoyable plant-based cakes.”
The cakes are available from Tesco now and will also be sold by Asda from 13 July.
Norseland launches vegan Mexican cheese
Norseland, a subsidiary of Norwegian cooperative Tine, is launching a vegan version of its Mexicana cheese in the UK.
Having entered the vegan category in 2018 with its Applewood brand, Norseland is now introducing consumers to Mexicana Vegan, containing a mix of spices and jalapeño peppers.
Mexicana Vegan is free-from lactose, milk, eggs, soya, nuts and gluten, and has been “fortified” with vitamin B12 and calcium.
However, Mexicana Vegan will not be available until July, when it will roll out in around 300 Asda stores at a recommended retail price of GBP2.30 (US$2.85) for a 200-gram block.
Hovis in new high-fibre launch
UK bakery group Hovis has introduced a high-fibre loaf with prebiotics to its range.
Hovis Fabulous Fibre will be on the shelves of Tesco from today (4 May) and will arrive at Waitrose on 20 May.
The company said two slices of Fabulous Fibre will provide eight grams of fibre, including a natural prebiotic fibre, as part of the recommended daily intake of 30 grams.
Jeremy Gibson, a marketing director for Hovis, which is jointly owned by UK food business Premier Foods and The Gores Group, said: “We are excited to launch our new Hovis Fabulous Fibre loaf which will help consumers boost fibre in their diet at a time when wellness and good health are at the forefront of everyone’s mind. Consumers want more nutritional products that are tasty and convenient which is exactly what this loaf delivers.”
Holland’s Pies enters vegan category
Holland’s Pies, the UK bakery business owned by 2 Sisters Food Group, is entering the plant-based category with the launch of the Vegan Roll.
From today (4 May), the 132-gram pack sized Vegan Roll is available in Morrisons stores located in the north west of England at a recommended retail price of GBP1.25 (US$1.55).
The herb-infused ‘sausage’ rolls are made with soya protein instead of meat and are encased in flaky pastry. They can be cooked fresh of from frozen.
