UK private-label major Bakkavor is proposing to close a salad factory in southern England.
The announcement comes less than 24 hours after the company confirmed it would be closing another salad facility, this one in Spalding in the English east Midlands, after a near two month consultation process.
Bakkavor’s new proposal concerns a facility in Alresford, Hampshire, and is due, the company said, to a “significant loss of business at the site with one of its key customers”.
The publicly-listed company added that “despite its best efforts,” it has not been able to replace the business which is due to transfer from the site to another supplier in October.
Bakkavor, which supplies fresh food to many of the UK’s largest grocers, employs around 100 people at the Alresford site.
Mike Edwards, UK chief operating officer at Bakkavor, said: “This is a sad day and it has been a very painful decision to make. We have worked hard over the last 20 years to become an integral part of the local community, both as a major employer and a supporter of many local community projects.

By GlobalData“As with businesses all over the UK, we are having to adjust our operations to a very different economic landscape, and this unfortunately involves the proposed closure of Alresford Salads.
“We will be working closely with employee representatives throughout the consultation process and fully appreciate that this is a difficult time for everyone concerned.”
Bakkavor acquired Alresford Salads in 2000.
The earlier announcement confirming the closure of the Spalding salad facility impacts around 500 employees.
Bakkavor blamed coronavirus and lost business at the start of the year for its decision to consolidate work across four factories at the Lincolnshire site.
