The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers not to eat Spokane Produce brand romaine lettuce because it has been associated with an outbreak of the potentially deadly bacteria E. coli O157:H7 in a cheerleading camp in Washington State in mid July.

The romaine lettuce, which is sold under several different brand names, is packaged in five-pound bags labelled “Romaine Toss” and was distributed by Food Services of America. The product has a shelf life of two weeks. To date, the outbreak has only involved exposure to romaine lettuce packaged in these five-pound bags.

So far, 29 individuals at the cheerleading camp have been confirmed to have E. coli O157:H7. Other illnesses in Washington State are being investigated.

Georgia’s Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin announced: “Our inspectors are checking grocery stores and food warehouses for this product. Anyone concerned about romaine lettuce should ask at the place of purchase to assure they do not consume this brand until the cause and extent of this outbreak is known.

“Because romaine lettuce is usually not cooked, there is a greater risk of consuming dangerous E. coli than there is with ground beef.”
