UK branded and own-label supplier Samworth Brothers has confirmed it is consultation with staff at one of its bakeries about the facility’s likely closure.

The facility in question is the Brooklands Bakery in Weybridge, Surrey, which was previously part of the Euphorium bakery business owned by supermarket giant Tesco until it was acquired by Samworth Brothers in October 2016.

In a brief statement seen by just-food, Samworth Brothers – perhaps best known for its Ginsters pasties range and Melton Mowbray pork pies – said: “With regret we have decided to begin a formal consultation process with our staff regarding the potential closure of The Brooklands Bakery.

“Despite significant financial investment and the best efforts of the team at Brooklands, the business continues to be loss-making and this is not sustainable in the long term.”

In January, Samworth Brothers announced it was to merge two bakeries in the south west of England.

In October it revealed its plans to open a GBP12m (US$15.7m at the then exchange rate) facility in Leicestershire.
