US-based cooperative Prairie Farms Dairy plans to close its fluid-milk processing site in Kentucky in June with the loss of 52 jobs.
David Atchley, the company’s general manager, made the announcement in a letter to the Kentucky Division of Workforce and Employment Services on 1 May.
The plant, located in Fulton County, will cease operations on 30 June. Affected employees will be offered severance pay and ”benefits”.
No reason was given for the closure by Prairie Farms Dairy, which had not responded to a request for comment by just-food at the time of publication.
Meanwhile, the company said it will continue to operate a distribution centre in the county, employing around 12 people.
Prairie Farms Dairy encompasses 900 farmer families and has been providing fresh milk since 1938. Its product range includes lactose-free and organic milk, butter, cheese, dips, ice cream and frozen yogurt. The company also produces milk snacks, such as its crème filled chocolate cake bars.
