Danone is to put the Nutri-Score nutrition labels being used by some manufacturers and retailers in France on products it sells over the border in Germany next year.
The company will label a selected range of its fresh dairy products on sale in the country at the start of next year with more SKUs to follow. “Progressively we will add further products,” a spokesperson for Danone said.
The Nutri-Score logo was launched in France last year after trials of three systems. France said the labels would help inform consumers about the foods they eat.
Introduced on a voluntary basis, 58 food and drink manufacturers operating in France, plus four of the country’s largest grocers, are using the labels, the Danone spokesperson said.
Danone’s decision to use the labels in Germany is part of the wider group’s moves to create what group CEO Emmanuel Faber last year called a “food revolution” to “nurture the adoption of healthier and more sustainable eating and drinking habits”.
The Danone spokesperson added: “Danone Germany also wants to contribute to the food revolution, by revising its products according to clearly defined nutritional targets for all products by 2020 and by introducing the front-of-pack labelling system Nutri-Score on its fresh dairy products. This system scores the nutritional value of foods and displays it on the products. It is simple, independent and scientifically-based. And most important: this front-of-pack system leads to healthier shopping behaviour.

By GlobalData“There are no other systems used at the moment in Germany, they are only other proposals. Looking at these proposals for colour coding they don’t give a simple orientation to consumers. Tests with consumers have shown that the Nutri-Score is understood. In France, the Nutri-Score is being introduced at the moment, based on the most substantiated study situation on a food labelling system so far.”
