A year after the horsemeat scandal and in a continued effort to restore consumer confidence, France yesterday launched a national meat label and logo.

The ‘Viandes de France’ initiative, which has brought together three government ministries and seven meat trade bodies, representing sectors specialising in beef, poultry, veal, pork, horse, rabbit and lamb and underpins efforts to achieve greater transparency on food origin, including that for prepared dishes.

French Agriculture Minister, Stéphane Le Foll, said the label offered “a double guarantee – the certainty of the origin of the products and also the assurance that sanitary and environmental norms had been met, the well-being of animals respected and the working conditions of staff protected”.

The Viandes de France label is expected to be rolled out across France by the end of the year.

Le Foll underlined the label will add value to French meat production and enhance its visibility not only on the domestic market but also for exports.
