The European Commission today [Wednesday] appointed Jaana Huso-Kallio Commission official of Finnish nationality, as Deputy Director General of the recently reorganised DG Health and Consumer protection Directorate General.
Husu-Kallio’s future tasks will be to assist the Director General in the DG’s activities in general and in particular on food safety, animal health and welfare, and plant health issues (Directorates D, E and F).
Husu-Kallio, 42 years of age, qualified as a doctor of veterinary medicine from Helsinki College of Veterinary Medicine in 1990. She will join the Commission directly from the Department of Food and Health at the Finnish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, where she started in 1992 in the field of animal disease control and animal protection, responsible for the preparation of various legislation from 1992 to 1997 and where since 1998, she is the Veterinary Chief of Finland, responsible for the security of foodstuffs from animal origin as well as plant health issues such as pesticides, fertilisers and animal feed.
