The UK’s third largest supermarket group, Asda, said it had experienced “excellent” Christmas sales despite a general weakening in UK consumer spending.
Asda, a subsidiary of US retail giant Wal-Mart, said both its food and non-food businesses maintained the strong sales growth it had enjoyed last year.
The company, which is the fastest growing UK grocer, said its 255 stores had their busiest trading day ever on 23 December.
Asda’s new photo and jewellery departments proved popular with customers and during the last week of trade before Christmas it sold 140 million sprouts and 750,000 pairs of slippers, reported Reuters.
