US-based confectioner Jelly Belly Candy Co. has decided to transfer part of the production at a plant in Chicago to the manufacturing facility at its HQ in California.
Jelly Belly said its site in Chicago will focus on private-label and contract production, with branded lines moving across to the West Coast. Around 66 jobs will be cut.

The company said the move would help it target growing own-label sales in the US. “Private-label food products have reported double-digit growth in recent years,” the confectioner said. “By realigning for long term business development, the company is targeting growth potential in private label and contract production services.”
A spokesperson told just-food the switch would not lead to expansion at the California plant. “The company will move equipment but not expand the physical structure of the 217,000 square foot factory. We have a separate building for warehousing and distribution which also will be sufficient for immediate needs.”
