US ice cream group Wells Enterprises is to shut its factory in Utah as it battles a sector facing stagnant sales and volatile raw material costs.

Production at the site in St. George – which employs around 90 staff – will move to a plant in Le Mars in Iowa. A Wells spokesperson said the transfer would be completed by the end of the year.

In a statement explaining the closure, Wells said: “The decision also allows Wells to more effectively compete in the ice cream category that has been flat to declining for several years, and has been further challenged by unstable commodity costs.”
