The European Commission has published a list of exported American food products that could be saddled with protective duties of up to 100%.

The duties would be imposed because of a World Trade Organisation ruling allowing Brussels to retaliate against the US’s use of foreign trade corporations to give its exporters illegal tax breaks.
The Commission included on its long-list of products: meat, offal, dairy produce, eggs, natural honey, vegetables, roots and tubers, fruit, nuts, peel, melon, cereals, wheat gluten, starches, malt, oil seeds, miscellaneous grains, animal or vegetable fats and oils, preparations of meat, fish, crustaceans and molluscs, sugar and sugar confectionary, pastry, plus preparations of vegetables, fruits and nuts.
Brussels will now consult with European industry about this list before choosing which duties it will finally impose. These would be levied in addition to existing tariffs. EuroCommerce Secretary General Xavier R. Durieu said: “It is important that Europe’s countermeasures meet all necessary conditions for effectiveness, but it must be excluded in any case that they cause harm to commerce in Europe.”
