US candy business American Licorice Co. has acquired local peer Torie & Howard for an undisclosed sum, it has announced.
Indiana-based American Licorice, maker of the Red Vines and Sour Punch brands, said Connecticut-headquartered Torie & Howard, which specialises in better-for-you vegan and organic sweets, has a portfolio of products complementary to its own.
Torie & Howard was co-founded by Torie Burke and Howard Slatkin in 2012 with a pledge to produce health-friendly and socially-conscious treats. Its brands include Torie & Howard Organic Hard Candy and Chewie Fruities Organic Candy Chews.
Its candies are USDA Organic- and Kosher-certified, allergen-friendly, non-GMO, vegan, and gluten-free.
Post-deal Torie Burke will join American Licorice to continue developing the Torie & Howard brand.

By GlobalDataJohn Kretchmer, CEO of American Licorice, said the Torie & Howard acquisition also complements recent American Licorice investments in its domestic market, including a minority investment in Theo Chocolate, an organic, Fairtrade-certified chocolate maker, and an investment in Mindful Nourishment, the creator of Zing bars, touted as a line of better-for-you confectionery.
