Frank Roberts & Sons, a UK-based family-run bakery firm, has merged its two business units, putting as many as 50 jobs on the line.
Roberts Bakery and Little Treats have been combined to make the “company simpler, leaner and more focused, and to ensure the business has the right cost structure and capability for future growth”, it said in a statement provided to just-food.
Frank Roberts & Sons, which is located in Cheshire, in north-west England, said talks with workers have started and the company expects to make up to 50 people redundant, depending on the outcome of talks.
The company was founded in 1887 in the town of Northwich. Roberts Bakery makes a range of breads, buns and sandwiches for the retail channel. Little Treats, meanwhile, supplies gingerbread, biscuits and iced “treats”, which are available in Tesco, Asda and Morrisons. It also supplies the foodservice sector.
The owners said the Covid-19 crisis had “increased the challenges” it was facing but noted the restructuring would have taken place regardless to “build a stronger business”.
