Asda said today (23 April) the focus of its investment has “shifted” to accelerating the expansion of its multichannel operations as it outlined plans for its online food business.

The UK’s second-largest fod retailer is expanding its click-and-collect online grocery service. It claimed a “world first” with plans for a “same-day” service for food orders collected in store.

“By focusing on their needs through accelerating our investment in the technology and infrastructure to make shopping more convenient, customers can shop for what they want, when they want it,” Asda president and CEO Andy Clarke said.

Asda shoppers will be able to collect grocery shopping from almost 200 outlets by the end of 2013, including from stores and lockers at Asda petrol stations.

Wal-Mart Stores’ UK arm plans to spend GBP700m (US$1.07bn) across its business this year. The investment includes another ten outlets, in addition to two opened since the start of 2013.

News of the investment came as Asda reported a 4.5% increase in revenue, including petrol, to GBP22.8bn for 2012. In February, Asda said its like-for-like sales, excluding fuel, had grown 1% last year.
