UK retail giant Tesco has said it is reviewing its use of the Carbon Trust’s carbon reduction label on its products.
Tesco launched its Carbon Reduction Labelling plan in 2004 in conjunction with the not-for-profit organisation Carbon Trust. The then CEO Sir Terry Leahy, labelled the scheme as the start of a “revolution in green consumption”.
However, in a statement today (30 January), the retailer said: “We know our customers care about product sustainability but there is a real challenge to effectively explain this often complex message in a meaningful way, so we are currently reviewing a range of options.”
The spokesperson said it has carbon footprinted around 1,100 of its products, of which 500 have been labelled with the Carbon Trust.
The organisation’s Carbon Reduction Labelling scheme aims to reduce the carbon footprints of company’s products. The labels are achieved by measuring the carbon emissions of a product at every step of the supply chain, resulting in cost saving opportunities for businesses.
