Spanish retailer Eroski plans to open a “zero power consumption” supermarket that requires no energy input from external sources.

The company said today (16 July) that the supermarket will be the first of its kind in Europe.

The 2,000 square-metre outlet will be equipped with various energy saving measures. The store’s heating, electricity and cooling needs will be met by a biomas system, the company added.

Eroski said that the development of the store was part of its commitment to reduce carbon emissions across its store base by 65%.
