Tesco has launched what it claims is the first click and collect service in Asia through one of its stores in Thailand.
The grocery click-and-collect scheme is located at the Tesco Lotus Extra Ramindra store in Bangkok. The retailer said it has plans to roll it out further, to Chiang Mai next and additional locations in the New Year.
Tesco launched an online retail offer in Bangkok in April, with a website offering 20,000 grocery, fresh food and non-food products for home delivery. However, the offer did not include a click and collect service.
Tesco already offers click-and-collect in the UK, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Ireland.
The offer will work in a similar way to the UK click-and-collect service, a spokesperson for Tesco said. Customers will drive into a dedicated collection point in the store car park and use the intercom to alert the store of their arrival. Colleagues then load the shopping into the customer’s car.
“Online shopping has proved really popular with customers in Bangkok since we launched six months ago,” said John Christie, CEO of Tesco’s Thai arm, Tesco Lotus.

By GlobalData“It makes grocery shopping much more convenient for them, especially with the traffic in Bangkok. We’re adding capacity all the time, and we’re pleased to be launching in two more cities, Pattaya and Chiang Mai, to bring our innovative service to more customers outside the capital. Click and collect has also proved hugely popular in the UK, so it’s a natural step to offer this as an option for customers in Thailand and demonstrates Tesco’s multichannel strength in this part of Asia.”
Tesco offers an online grocery service in around 50 cities across ten markets globally.
Earlier this month, Tesco revealed a sharp drop in first-half earnings. Sales, however, were up. Online grocery sales increased 13% in the UK and 54% overseas.
