US chicken manufacturer Pilgrim’s Pride is to cut around 85 jobs from its Chattanooga poultry processing plant in Tennessee as part of streamlining measures at the company.

The firm said the job losses are a result of “mix changes and operational improvements” in order to “create greater efficiencies across the entire supply chain”.

The employees affected by the cuts were notified yesterday (24 May) they will be laid off today, the company said.

“We are still evaluating other processes and potential additional impact, and we will know more over the next week or so. As we clarify plans, we will communicate these with our employees,” the company said.

Pilgrim said the changes are not expected to impact contract growers or its customers, as it plans to continue processing all birds being grown for the Chattanooga complex.

In a letter to employees, Tim Lawson, complex manager at the Chattanooga facility, said he is “confident that the changes will help Chattanooga and Pilgrim’s be successful in the years ahead” adding, “Chattanooga is and will remain an important asset for Pilgrim’s”.
