French dairy group Lactalis plans to close three Parmalat manufacturing plants in Italy, union officials have said.

Lactalis, which became Parmalat’s majority shareholder last week, is looking to shut sites in Genoa, Villaguardia and Cliavegna, the Uila-Uli union said.

The union was informed of the plan yesterday (4 July) at a meeting with Parmalat. Tiziana Bocchi, its national secretary, said the proposals were “totally unsatisfactory”.

Bocchi said the union agreed with Parmalat that economic pressure in Italy had hit the dairy sector but said the company lacked a “clear vision of its future”.

Speaking to just-food, a spokesperson said: “The trade union is not only concerned about the closing of the three plants. The main concern is the absence of a comprehensive strategy for the future development of the group in Italy.”

The union has called for a two-hour strike to be held in protest at the plans on 23 July.

Officials at Lactalis could not be reached for comment.
