French retailer Carrefour has remained silent on reports it is slowing its pace of expansion in India.

The company, which opened its first Indian store in 2010 under the Carrefour Cash & Carry Wholesale banner, declined to comment on local reports it has put its expansion plans in the country on hold.

According to the Business Standard newspaper, Europe’s biggest retailer is “rationalising” its store opening plans in India as it battles the global economic downturn, particularly in Europe.
