The UK government is considering options to simplify and clarify the use of “best before” and “use by” dates in a bid to cut household food waste.
A spokesperson for the UK’s Department Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said the Government is concerned that consumer misunderstanding of “best before” and “use by” dates contribute “significantly” to food waste in the country.

“Packaged foods are legally required to carry a “best before” date – even though it is usually safe for them to be consumed after this date. The “use by” date shows when food is no longer safe to eat – and it is important that consumers understand this,” the spokesperson said.
Defra has consulted with retailers and manufacturers on the issue and is currently considering options to clarify this issue.
