Tesco has scrapped its campaign to offer Double the Difference on products found cheaper at rival Asda, blaming customers who abused the system.
The retailer blamed a “cottage industry of savvy and determined people”, who identified products on short-term promotion in Asda, then bought them at Tesco, refund vouchers through Price Check – then bought more of the same products with the coupons and continued recycling coupons to make money.
Tesco will now offer the difference on products found cheaper at Asda. The move follows the retailer announcing a GBP20 (US32.9) maximum refund in March.
“Price Check has given our customers confidence in our prices and transparency. But some people have misused the scheme to cash in. So we have taken this step to protect Price Check for the majority of our customers,” a Tesco spokesperson said.
Tesco launched its Double the Difference in retaliation against Asda’s Price Guarantee, which promised to refund the difference to consumers if it is not 10% cheaper than its main rivals.
