Metro plans to double its investment in Turkey this year, spending EUR120m (US$171.4m) to open six new cash and carry hypermarkets.

The first of the six stores was opened over Easter at Batikent in Ankara following an investment of EUR20m, the company confirmed to just-food.

Metro Group has invested a total of EUR700m since it entered the Turkish market in 1990 and currently operates 19 metro cash and carry outlets, 14 Real hypermarkets, 17 Media Markt and three Saturn electronics stores.

In 2010 Metro reported a turnover of EUR1.7bn in the market.
