US retailer A&P has confirmed plans to sell its Food Emporium stores as the company looks to resize the business after its spell under Chapter 11.
A&P emerged from Chapter 11 in March and is looking at closing unprofitable stores and reduce its labour costs.
It has started the marketing process to sell 16 of the Food Emporium stores. It is understood the one Food Emporium outlet in Connecticut will not be sold.
“The Food Emporium represents a unique urban footprint that requires a specific go-to-market strategy,” the company said. “Therefore, we’ve made the decision to market these 16 Manhattan stores to a variety of prospective buyers. The sale will enable parent company A&P to support the company’s long-term strategic vision to be the number one food and drug store in every neighbourhood it serves.”
The company, which operates around 320 stores under the A&P, Pathmark, Waldbaum’s, Food Emporium and Food Basics banners, has shed around 80 stores since filing for bankruptcy protection in December 2010.
