Bushel 42 Pasta Company, a supplier to pasta giant American Italian Pasta Co., has laid off 30 of its 75 employees.

The company said the move was necessary to make it more efficient, as it is focusing on a smaller product line.

Bushel 42 is a cooperative owned by more than 250 farmers in North Dakota and Montana. It produces novelty pastas including flavoured and coloured noodles. Earlier this year the company inked a deal with American Italian Pasta Co. to supply speciality products, leading to speculation that Bushel 42 could soon be on AITP’s shopping list.

Les Knudson, chairman of the board of directors at Bushel 42, denied the cooperative had any plans to sell or merge.
