The India division of cereal giant Kellogg is being prosecuted by the country’s Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSAI) over claims made on the advertising of its Special K cereal.
A notice on the FSSAI’s website noted a Kelloggs advertisement which claimed that “research shows that people who eat low fat breakfast like Kellogg’s Special K, tend to be slimmer than those who don’t”. It said the ads were “misleading and deceptive”.
Complaints had been filed against the advertisement, although the organisation didn’t state how many on the notice.
Kellogg did not return a request for comment at the time of going to press.
According to Food Safety Blog, the FSSAI has initiated prosecution proceedings against the company for the claims. The case is yet to be heard.
