Agriculture Commissioner Franz Fischler has today [Thursday] donated a cheque for €25 735 (US$25,253) to the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI), a British charity providing help and support to those in need within the farming community in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

“BSE and FMD have brought misery and despair to many British farmers. This donation is a symbol of solidarity. I have chosen RABI because its charity work for elderly and disabled people in the farming community is of inestimable value,” Fischler commented.


The donation has been raised from sales of the cartoon collection “Wir schaffen uns schon noch”. The book came out to mark the “Gothaer Karikade 2001”, Germany’s biggest cartoon and caricature competition. Thirty cartoonists were asked for drawings inspired by the theme of “Wir schaffen uns schon noch. Karikaturisten sehen Rinder – und anderen Wahnsinn” [We’ll do ourselves in yet. Cartoonists take a look at cows and other madnesses].


Agriculture Commissioner Franz Fischler awarded the prizes to the winners on 4 November 2001. They were chosen by a jury from the media and the art world; the competition had €10,000 to give away in prize money and is supported by the “Gothaer Versicherungen” insurance company. Before an audience of around 400, Franz Fischler handed the “Golden Gothaer” to Brian Bagnall (Nürnberger Zeitung, Playboy magazine). The second prize went to Greser & Lenz (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Titanic magazine), the third prize to Rudi Hurzlmeier (Stern magazine, Titanic, and the satirical magazine Eulenspiegel).
