Chinese reports have publicised a product recall after milk produced by Shanghai Panda Dairy Co. was found to be contaminated with the industrial chemical melamine.

Although the recall involves products from just one company, it is reminiscent of 2008’s melamine scandal, which resulted in the the deaths of at least six babies and hospitalisation of over 300,000 others.

Shanghai Panda Dairy Co. was shut and three of its top officials were detained by police after its condensed and powdered milk products were found to contain excessive amounts of melamine, Chinese news reports claimed.

According to Chinese state media, the company was caught selling milk included in the 2008 scandal that should have been destroyed.

Melamine is an industrial chemical that has been used to artificially boost the protein content of raw milk.
