UK chocolate maker Thorntons has set itself a target of ensuring all the palm oil it uses is sustainable sourced by 2012.

Thorntons is the latest of a number of companies to make a commitment to use certified sustainable palm oil (CSPO).

Premier Foods, Marks and Spencer and Waitrose recently signed up to the sustainable palm oil programme GreenPalm in a bid to commit to more environmentally friendly sourcing.

Derbyshire-based Thorntons said it uses palm oil in a number of the centres in its chocolates because of its “unique flavour and texture properties”.

A spokesperson for the confectioner told just-food: “The company is concerned about the impact that some palm oil growers have on the environment and only use suppliers who are members of the Round Table for Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO).
