Grocery sales in the UK have slowed in January but remained ahead of overall retail sales, new figures have revealed.

According to the British Retail Consortium’s retail sales monitor, UK retail sales by value fell 0.7% on a like-for-like basis from January 2009.

On a total basis, sales rose 1.2% against a 3.2% increase in January 2009.

On a three-month basis, total sales increased by 3.9%. Food sales increased by 4.3%, ahead of non-food, which saw sales expand 3.7%.

However, the BRC said that food sales during the period were affected by the poor weather in the UK, with sales weighted towards the start of the month as consumers stocked up on essential items.

“When the weather improved, food sales slowed,” the BRC said.
