UK snack group United Biscuits has unveiled plans to reduce the impact its operations have on the environment.
The company, famous for brands including McVitie’s biscuits and McCoy’s crisps, has set targets on six areas, including reducing CO2 emissions and energy use and cutting the amount of waste it sends to landfill.
Chief operating officer Jeff van der Eems said: “Protecting the environment is everyone’s responsibility and we want to play our part. To quantify our aims we have set ourselves targets to consider every use of resource and make sustainable choices. We are committed to making quality food in the most sustainable manner possible.”
Callton Young, Director of Sustainability at the Food and Drink Federation, claimed United Biscuits had created an “exemplary package” to tackle its impact on the environment.
“It covers the key environmental priorities faced by the UK food and drink industry and includes milestones for making real and measurable progress,” Young said. “United Biscuits is therefore to be applauded for the environmental leadership it is showing.”
