US dairy firm Land O’Lakes is to launch an American deli cheese with 30% less sodium than its regular variety.
‘Land O’Lakes 30% Less Sodium American Deli Cheese’ is designed to offer a “healthier” alternative, the firm said.
“We strive to offer a product that has both great taste and is better for you,” said Land O’Lakes Deli brand manager Erin Gislason.
“It’s a delicate balance to manage, but with the addition of sea salt to this product, Land O’Lakes 30% Less Sodium American Deli Cheese Product really does deliver on both promises.”
The product will be available in eastern US states from May.
Food manufacturers are increasingly reducing the salt content in their products.

By GlobalDataLast month, US cheese specialist Sargento Foods introduced a series of reduced-sodium products targeted at health-conscious consumers in the US.
This month, US cereal giant General Mills also set a target to reduce the sodium content in 600 of its products by around 20%. Kraft Foods has also pledged to reduce sodium by an average of 10% across its North American portfolio over the next two years.
However, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) this week put the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under pressure to work with the food makers to introduce mandatory limits to the amount of salt added to foods.
A report by the IOM said that reductions in sodium could prevent more than 100,000 deaths in the US each year.
