Danish dairy giant Arla Foods has spent US$35m expanding its whey processing plant in Argentina.
On Friday (23 April), Arla opened a second spray-drying tower at the facility, some 600km north-east of the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires.
The tower allows Arla to convert the permeate left over from the production of whey protein concentrate into a “non-hygroscopic ingredient” for bakery, confectionery and dairy products. the company said.
“Permeate has a lactose content of 90%, making it a cost-effective alternative to lactose in food products,” says Bjarne Schack Pedersen, MD of Arla Foods Ingredients.
In addition to permeate, the new tower will process functional milk proteins for use in food applications like ice cream and chocolate.
