Italian food group Barilla has refused to be drawn on reports that it has contacted 20 potential bidders for the chain of Kamps bakery shops that it put up for sale last week.

A report in the Financial Times said the food group has asked potential buyers for Kamps, the German baker, to submit initial bids for the company within the next four weeks.

The report said Barilla had contacted around 20 potential bidders, including Heiner Kamps, the founder of the German group.

According to reports, Barilla is hoping to obtain a price of around EUR100m and is aiming to complete the sale by the summer.

A Barilla spokesperson declined to comment on the reports when contacted by just-food today (11 March).

Barilla acquired Kamps for EUR1.8bn (US$2.8m) in 2002. Its sale plans do not involve the bread-making unit Kamps Brot und Backwaren, which operates in the consumer market with leading brands Golden Toast and Lieken Urkorn.
