US firm Sconza Candy has announced plans to acquire the former Hershey plant in Oakdale, California.

It is expected that the purchase will be completed by 1 May and production should begin in early October, Sconza said.

The 300,000 square foot facility will employ around 100 workers and allow Sconza to consolidate its manufacturing operations under one roof. The group currently operates across three separate Oakland locations.

Commenting on the acquisition, Sconza CEO Jim Sconza said: “The plant is ideal for candy production and, in addition, is conveniently located at the source of our major ingredients including chocolate, sugar, nuts and fruit.”

Hershey announced its plans to close the Oakdale plant in May last year when it unveiled a major restructuring plan designed to streamline production and improve margins in the US. Some 575 jobs were lost.
