German discount chain Aldi is reportedly eyeing entry into the Russian retail sector.

According to a report in Russian daily Vedomosti, Aldi has applied to register its brand with Rospatent, the Russian patent agency.

Aldi has confirmed its interest in the market but declined to comment on any plans it may have to launch its brand in Russia.

“Obviously the Russian market is interesting for us,” a spokesperson for the company told just-food.

“We will not comment on whether or not we plan to enter Russia,” the spokesperson added.
