Carrefour franchisee Hyparlo Group has identified Romania as a key growth market after its first-quarter figures revealed its sales in the country had jumped by almost 37%.

Growth in Romania drove a 16.4% rise in group sales to EUR474.9m (US$747.8m) during the first quarter. Sales in France were stagnant, inching up 1.6%.

“The turnover in the first quarter shows good resistance in France and the continuation of good performance in Romania,” Hyparlo said.

In Romania, where Hyparlo operates outlets under the Carrefour banner, the company said it would continue to integrate the 21 Artima supermarkets acquired earlier this year.

Hyparlo predicted that it would continue to see a quick pace of growth in Romania during the remainder of this year.
