The Australian state of New South Wales is preparing to introduce legislation that gives local councils the power to “name and shame” companies that violate food safety laws.
Unveiling the plans, primary industries minister Ian Macdonald said the Food Amendment Act 2007 will come into effect at the beginning of next month.
“This ‘name and shame’ legislation is about providing choice to the people of NSW and giving an added incentive to businesses to do the right thing,” Macdonald said.
The new laws will see the details of food companies that receive penalty notices from the Food Safety Authority and NSW councils for serious food offences posted online.
