US food giant Kraft Foods has appointed Michael Clarke president of its European business.

Clarke joins Kraft from The Coca-Cola Company, where he held a variety of positions including, most recently, president of its Northwest Europe and Nordic businesses.

Announcing the appointment yesterday (15 December), Kraft highlighted Clarke’s international experience both with Coca-Cola and Reebok, where he worked in Europe, the US and developing markets such as Africa and the Middle East.

“Mike brings a terrific mix of strategic, financial and operating experience,” said chairman and CEO Irene Rosenfeld. “I’m confident his experience and strong track-record of results will build on our momentum in Europe.”

Based in Zurich, Switzerland, Clarke will be responsible for Kraft’s European businesses and report directly to Rosenfeld.

Sanjay Khosla, president of Kraft International, will continue to lead the businesses in developing markets, reporting to Rosenfeld, the company said. He will also assume additional responsibilities for Kraft’s global category teams in snacking and beverages in North America, Europe and developing markets.

The appointment effectively separates Kraft’s European business from its other international operations.

The appointment will come into effect in January.
