Spanish supermarket chain Superdiplo is set to close 23 outlets across the country by 2002.
The stores earmarked for closure are those in towns already containing two or more similarly branded supermarkets, a situation that has been created by the recent acquisition of Superdiplo by Dutch retail giant Ahold.
The first outlet to close will be in the southern city of Malaga.
