The US has demanded that a disputes panel is established at the World Trade Organisation to rule on its claim that anti-dumping duties imposed by Mexico on US long-grain white rice exports break world trade rules.

Washington has published a string of complaints about the imposition of the tariff. It claims, for instance that Mexico did not collect and analyse recent trade data before taking its decision and that it had not properly proved that cheap American rice exports were harming the Mexican production industry.

The US also claims that by allowing importers to be fined when their goods are subject to antidumping and countervailing duty investigations, Mexico’s Foreign Trade Act also breaks WTO rules.
