Spanish scientists have discovered a possible link between the development of asthma and the consumption of cereal in the first few months of a baby’s life.

Babies fed cereals at this early age were six times more likely to develop the respiratory problem and sensitivity towards grass pollen, according to the research, which was published in the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Allergy.

The study, which was conducted by researchers in Spanish hospitals, focused on 16,000 patients with asthma and found that 84.4% of sufferers who were sensitive to grass pollen had eaten cereal as babies. Only 15.1% had been breastfed.
