UK dairy ingredient group Meadow Foods has acquired Nene Valley Foods, a wholly-owned unit of Dairy Farmers of Britain, for an undisclosed sum.

Nene Valley processes packaged cream for the food ingredient market. The business operates a Peterborough-based processing facility with a capacity of 25,000 tonnes.

“This is a strategic acquisition for our group which consolidates our position as the UK’s leading independent supplier of fresh dairy ingredients,” Simon Chantler, executive chairman of Meadow Foods, said.

“Our strategy is to develop our business to provide long term security of supply of critical dairy ingredients to the major food manufacturers in the UK. Nene fits into this strategy perfectly and provides an excellent platform to extend our customer base and product offering in the high service area of fresh value-added ingredients.”

Meanwhile, Dairy Farmers of Britain said that the disposal is part of its stretegic review. The company has seen profits dwindle as dairy commodity prices have dropped and has indicated its intention to focus on value-added products.

“The disposal is part of our wider strategic review of DFB’s processing activity. We are working hard to address the challenges we face in our business and this work continues,” Dairy Farmers of Britain chairman John Grantchester said.
