EU consumer affairs Commissioner David Byrne has revealed details of a planned new European directive on food labelling to a round table on food quality, safety and production.
Assuming it is agreed by the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers, he said that the directive would make compulsory the listing of all ingredients of foodstuffs and potential allergens. The proposal would abolish the existing 25% labelling rule, which means that it is not obligatory to label the components of compound ingredients that make up less than a quarter of a final food product.
Under the new directive, all ingredients would have to be labelled.
